Tech Beat: Smartphones vs. netbooks vs. laptops

Thinking about taking a road trip? A lot of us do not plan in advance. We want to jump in the car, find sights and accommodations — wherever the road leads.

Are you a frequent business traveler? You need to check e-mail and edit documents no matter where you go. You will also use a projector for client presentations.

Are you a working commuter? You would like to catch up on Facebook during the train ride. You also want to play some games.

These days, there are many choices for mobile computing. Choosing the right mobile device can be difficult. Smartphones have many of the same abilities as laptops. There are also netbooks and the iPad. Before you make a decision, consider these points:

Storage and connections

Most people have modest needs when it comes to storage. You may store music, some TV shows and a few documents. But others need more space. For example, maybe you want to offload video or photos from a camera.

Of course, youll also need to connect to your camera or camcorder. In these cases, a laptop is your best bet. Laptops offer ample storage and plenty of USB connections. A netbook will also work, but dont plan on serious photo or video editing.

Almost all modern smartphones, netbooks, notebooks, iPads, etc., are Bluetooth-integrated. This allows you to wirelessly connect devices such as a keyboard, a mouse, a headset, etc. However, Bluetooth is a monstrous battery hog. Most people disable it, as they never use it. Those

UP manifesto: Laptops, agri sops on offer

Lucknow: Political parties have turned visionary, in time for the Uttar Pradesh polls. While for the BJP, the central theme is ‘Vision 2025, for the Congress, it’s Vision 2020. And the road map for the future of the state—which, by all means, remains quite low on the development ladder — borders around key economic issues, such as education, employment and the economy.

Talking of vision, both national parties have on top of their agenda the 50% voting population of the state, which constitutes the youth. Jobs and tech gizmos, such as laptops and tablets, top the priority list, along with agriculture. Basic infrastructure, such as power, roads and high-quality public transport, and land acquisition—which is very important for making the state an industrial hub— make up the rest of the points of attention. The Congress’ nine-point vision document for UP, titled NAV Uttar Pradesh 2020 promises Nyaya (justice), Adhikaar (right) and Vikas…

Report: Laptops with Built-In Kinect Tech on the Way

Well now, this is just neat. Or it could be. Kinect hasnt exactly won the hearts of hardcore gamers just yet, but its got quite the DIY mod following on PC. With Kinect PCs official roll-out mere days away, itll be interesting to watch this thing take on a life of its own — figuratively, mind you, and hopefully not in the apocalyptic Skynet sense. Especially seeing as The Daily reports that Kinect-powered Asus laptops are in the prototype phase. In theory, games are only the tip of the iceberg for the little-camera-that-could (watch you sleep) as well. As Minority Report taught us, voice and motion controls are the future of all things. If, god forbid, Tom Cruise and Hollywood were somehow wrong, however, at least Ill still be able to flail foolishly at my Kinectimals no matter where I go. Thank goodness for that.

Miami kids getting inexpensive laptops

MIAMI Children in one of Miamis toughest neighborhoods are getting rugged, inexpensive laptop computers similar to ones distributed to schoolchildren in developing countries.

The One Laptop Per Child Association in Miami gave more than 500 green-and-white laptops Friday to students at Holmes Elementary School in Liberty City.

Officials with the association tell The Miami Herald that the laptop program aims to boost the students interest in learning.

The $200 XO laptops run open-sourced software and are designed specifically for children. The John S. and James L. Knight Foundation financed the laptops for Holmes Elementary.

The One Laptop Per Child Association has a sister foundation in Massachusetts that has distributed the laptops in Nicaragua, Peru, Rwanda and other countries.

Trucker guilty of killing competitor

JACKSONVILLE A Jacksonville truck driver has been convicted of killing a competitor.

A Duval County jury found 51-year-old Colavito Anton Bell guilty Thursday of first-degree murder. He faces a mandatory sentence of life.

The Florida Times-Union reports that Bell and 41-year-old Christopher Oney both worked as independent contractors for Oldcastle Coastal. They delivered the companys landscaping stones to Lowes and The Home Depot stores in the area.

Prosecutors say Bell was upset that Oney made $46,000 more than him in 2007, leading Bell to fatally shoot Oney in January 2008. Police linked Bell to the murder after a witness described a car leaving the scene that matched the description of Bells yellow Honda Prelude with purple-flared stripes, tinted windows and a skull-and-crossbones decal.

Cablevision Flips Live TV To Laptops With Microsoft Silverlight

Cablevision Systems is running a limited trial of an application that lets subscribers watch live TV on PCs and Macs over a home Wi-Fi network, using Microsofts Silverlight media-delivery technology.

The Optimum App for Laptop, expected to be launched for all the MSOs subscribers sometime in 2012, follows Cablevisions rollout last year of apps for watching live TV and VOD on iPads, iPhones and iPod touch devices last year — which are also limited to in-home access, based on current distribution agreements with programmers.

Cablevision is currently testing a limited version of our Optimum app for laptop and notebook computers, with a limited number of customers, the company said in a statement. Starting with the launch of Optimum App for iPad last year, we have always said that we expect to deliver our full cable television service to every screen in the home capable of functioning as a television, offering our customers additional value, convenience and an enhanced user experience on a variety of devices.

News of the trial was first reported Thursday by tech news website The Verge.

The Optimum App for Laptop software is currently available only to Long Island residential customers with a subscription to both iO TV and Optimum Online. It works with Windows 7, Vista or XP Service Pack 2, or Mac OS X 10.4.8 or higher. The application requires 25 Megabytes of free disk space and Microsoft Silverlight must be installed.

Cablevision lets customers register up to eight devices — any combination of iPad, iPhone, iPod touch devices or laptops — but only watch live TV on two devices at the same time.

The app provides a channel guide with program info for the current date and the next 12 days, as well as the current top five most-watched TV programs. Users can filter TV listings by day, genre and other criteria.

As with the iPad and iPhone apps, the Optimum App for Laptop provides parental controls as well as closed captioning. However, interactive channels, Music Choice, pay-per-view and public, education and government (PEG) channels are currently not available.

More info on the Cablevision laptop app is available here: www.optimum.net/OptimumDesktop/landing.

Samsung Laptops Show New NVIDIA 600 Series Mobile GPUs

While at this years CES, we received a tip from an unnamed source that there were Kepler GPUs located in some Samsung laptops on the floor. So, we decided to go and check it out for ourselves and surprisingly enough, there were indeed some Mobile 600 series GPUs.

If you take a look at our images below, you will see that we saw two different laptops with one major variation, their GPUs. These were Samsungs Series 5, 550P5 and 550P7 laptops. The real major difference here was that this one was a Kepler GPU and the other was simply a rebadged Fermi mobile GPU. Both laptops also support NVIDIAs optimus switching technology.

If you look at the shader cores you can see that the N13P-GT is going to be a mid-range performance part as it features 2GB of dedicated GPU memory as well as 96 CUDA cores and a 405MHz core clock. Whats interesting is that if you compare this to the GT 630 GPU in the 550P7 laptop, you can see that both of them have the same amount of CUDA cores (shaders). The GK-107 part, the N13P-GT is actually clocked lower than the GT 630 GPU in the 550P7 laptop. Either this indicates to us that NVIDIAs Kepler mobile GPUs really do have an improved performance per clock, or the N13P-GT isnt as high-end of a part as had been rumored. Both GPUs have the exact same 2GB of DDR3 memory and both have the same 1.8GHz effective memory clock.

The similarity between clocks is really what confuses us, though, since the N13P-GT is a 405MHz part and the 630 GT is a 475MHz part. Those clock differences are followed by similarities in shader clock, which also mimic the GPU clock differential. Were just not sure why NVIDIA would make two so similar parts unless one was a newer generation part and the other was simply a rebadge.

Were still not entirely sure whether or not N13P-GT is a Kepler part or not considering its relative similarity to the GT 630 which has been known to be a Fermi rebranded mobile GPU. We are hopeful that weve stumbled upon the first Kepler part in a mobile devices, but we remain somewhat cautious about it being one considering all of the similarities.
